Handful of Cookies...Now What?
You are all set up, you are training your dog. What to do with your offside hand that is full of cookies?
I know this sounds kinda strange, but when you are training your dog using food, many times we like to hold cookies in our “offside hand”, I know I do it all the time.
So why is it important to be aware of this potential problem?
Our dogs are super smart (not that you need me to tell you that), and they can often gauge what is going to happen next by watching our body language, which often includes that off side hand.
So what do you do? You actually have a few choices….
#1 Keep that hand behind you. This will take the temptation out of view, make it easier for your dog to focus on the task at hand.
#2. Use a treat bag. I know, this sounds super simple, but sometimes the simplest things are what we need to do for success.
#3. Put the cookies on the counter, shelf etc. Again, a simple one, but it does serve the purpose and gets the cookies out of your hands, allowing you to do that job at hand with less distraction for you and your dog.
